With the iBook, Jobs, Apple's seemingly permanent interim CEO, jumped through a daunting business hoop of his own. He needed one year to create products in four areas (professional and consumer desktops and portables) and just two years to make Apple a comeback king, a feat perhaps unduplicated in tech history.

After tbe keynote ended, Apple employees scatered around the croud stood up and took out their iBooks!! They were in generic black bags so no one would suspect anything. Anyone in the keynote could have tried one, which were leashed to its employee.

All in all, the keynote audience was very pleased with the iBook except for two points: pricing and availability. At $1599, $400 more than the iMac, I think the iBook is reasonably priced for a consumer portable, but more than people had hoped for. TFT displays and six-hour batteries don’t come cheap, after all. I’m sure Apple is just as disappointed as we are that the iBook won’t be available to start the school year, but if they coulda done it, they woulda.

Yet the iBook clamshell remains one of my favorite portable Macs. The great battery life, AirPort, rugged feel, and, yep, even the handle are all reasons it still often makes the WiFi coffee house run though I have an iBook G4 and Vostro 1400 sitting in the stable.

Apple has been pressing hard to retain its place in the education market as it offers more appealing computers to consumers, and the iBook introduced new technologies that it hopes will appeal to both markets.

Remember that the iBook is not designed for professional use, and as much as a typical TidBITS reader might want additional features and capabilities, many of us aren't the target audience. Apple is targeting the consumer market with the iBook, and the designers obviously thought long and hard about which features could be cut to save money while at the same time differentiating the iBook from the PowerBook G3.
