10 Discontinued Apple Products We Miss
5: The "Clamshell" iBook
(Debuted: 1999; Discontinued: 2001)
It isn't hyperbole to say that the iBook (and that same year's iMac) line shocked the world by introducing colors to computers, shattering the dominant beige paradigm present at that time. Unfortunately, only five colors were made available (and some crazy designs later), and Apple has yet to repeat the experiment, but we live in hope.

Appleās first consumer/education notebook shipped in 1999 and broke a lot of new ground. From the durable construction and floppy-drive free design to its fruity iMac inspired styling and, of course, 802.11b (11Mbps) wi-fi networking, the clamshell (a.k.a. toilet seat) iBook was very much different and in many ways better than anything else on the market at the time.

In an industry that values style and fashion, our young company had barely celebrated its first birthday when I realised its technology already looked out of date. The multicoloured clamshell shape of the iBook had arrived on the scene, utterly transforming the way our industry worked.

Last week, I attended the greatest show on Earth - if you're a computer geek - Macworld Expo. As you may have heard by now, Apple iCEO Steve Jobs introduced the new iBook there, and it was awesome.
