We heartily agree with Laptop's assessment of the absolute worst notebook design, the Apple iBook from 1999 that most of us thought looked exactly like a toilet seat in a cheap motel. Sure, it was available in all kinds of gorgeous colors, but besides being underpowered, its design was widely considered to be a joke.

The yellowing of polycarbonate plastic

The bright sun causes the yellowing of polycarbonate plastics. Please store your clamshell in a shady place, otherwise the opaque white will turn to off-white and the grey will turn to green grey. The photo shows a aged display housing on the left side, the other one is brand new.

Changing the optical drive

The CD-ROM or DVD drive in the Clamshell iBook is disguised to an extent that you can hardly believe that a standard drive lies underneath the cage which holds it in its place. You can dismantle the drive and use even a DVD burner as long as you make sure that it is set to master or cable select.

New battery won't charge - PRAM capacitor problem?

Your old battery is dead and gone - but the new one refuses to charge. A good many times a defective PRAM capacitor (the blue round one in the middle of the picture) might be the cause. It is located near the red power and reset buttons and is used to keep the date and time for a short while when the battery is changed. When it is not longer working it disturbs the charging process.
The PRAM capacitor has 5.5V and 0.33F - you'll find it in (web)shops of consumer electronics retailer for 4$ or less.

Multicoloured Clamshell iBook

Since most components of the Clamshell iBook series are compatible, it is possible to compose a multicolored iBook - the screen from a Blueberry the trackpad from a Tangerine, the DVD drive from a Keylime, keyboard from a Graphite and the bottom case from an Indigo .
I put some photos into my Flickr account.

If you want to place a 366MHZ and 466MHZ (second edition) logicboard in a blueberry or tangerine bottom case you have to drill a hole for the firewire port if you want to make use of it.
If you don't want to harm the case, let the firewire port remain covered.
